"The intellectualisation
of football has
always foundered
on a simple problem-
-the players. Doing
all your most
rewarding thinking
with your feet seems
to dull the philo-
sophical impulse.
Unless, of course,
you are Dutch.
According to legend,
Europeans played
a moronic, muscular
version of the world's
game, until Holland
proclaimed its vision
of total football in the
1974 World Cup,
and enlightenment
dawned."

Group E - Qualifications

San Marino-Netherlands 0-5

3 September 2010

In a game that seemed to revolve around Ruud van Nistelrooy in more than one way Holland played a compulsory game that they won 0-5. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar was the main goalscorer. The match had some decent moments and a great last minute Ruud van Nistelooy goal, but few reasons why we should remember this encounter between two teams at opposite sides of the FIFA World Ranking.

Holland played too predictable and too slow in the first half, but still bagged two goals. Dirk Kuyt converted a penalty after a foul on Huntelaar and then helped Huntelaar to his first of the night.

After the break Van der Vaart replaced Nigel de Jong and that move was an improvement. The new Tottenham Hotspur-player had an assist on Huntelaar's second and also started Huntelaar's third with a brilliant back heel. The assist was of Dirk Kuyt.

It was Kuyt's last contribution to the game, as he was replaced straight after by Van Nistelrooy. The Hamburg striker was a bit to eager at first, moving about too much, but then he assumed his position up front and scored his inevitable goal. A good one, although fully irrelevant but for Van Nistelrooy's ranking in the all time top goal scorer list. Van Nistelrooy has now passed Cruyff and Lenstra to assume fourth place, one goal from Faas Wilkes in third spot and six goals from number one Patrick Kluivert.
